Don’t Get Stranded: What Boating on Philpott Lake Taught Me About Business Transformation
July 15, 2025 By: Ed Wright

On summer weekends, you’ll often find me and my family boating on Philpott Lake, a beautiful and lesser-known spot tucked into the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. The water is cool, the scenery is stunning, and the peaceful escape from the daily routine is always worth the drive.
But as calm and inviting as it looks, Philpott is not the kind of place you go without preparation. Cell signal is unreliable in many areas. If something goes wrong, you cannot count on your phone. Without a marine radio, you could easily get stranded. And even with one, you still may not have access to live radar. Summer in the mountains often brings pop-up storms that appear out of nowhere, dumping sheets of rain for thirty to forty-five minutes and lighting up the sky with thunder and lightning.
Last weekend, we planned ahead. We picked a location with signal, checked the forecast early, saw the storm building, packed up in time, and docked at the marina before the downpour started. The wind whipped, the rain came in sideways, and lightning cracked around us. But we were dry, safe, and ready.
This is exactly how transformation works. You cannot be 80 percent prepared. You need to be all in. That does not mean having every answer in advance, but it does mean having a clear story, a shared direction, and a plan you can rely on when conditions change.
This is where most firms get stuck. They begin to move forward without defining the story behind their transformation. Without that clarity, it becomes hard to make decisions, rally the team, or communicate progress. Roadmap steps four through six are all about building this story, creating a compelling transformation narrative, defining measurable goals and success metrics, and identifying the technology gaps that could block your progress. These steps are not just planning tools. They are the foundation that keeps everything aligned when the unexpected happens. Without them, teams drift. With them, they adapt and move forward with confidence.
At Elev8te, we help firms do just that. We help you plan your strategy, shape your transformation story, align your leadership team, and stay ready when unexpected challenges show up.
If your business is evolving, scaling, or launching something new, make sure you are fully prepared.
